1 October 2008 | TOUGH TIMES, TOUGH GUYS: SPEAKERS FOR TMA CONFERENCE

These are tough times, so TMA (UK) has called in two of the toughest guys in the business as motivational speakers for its annual conference on 13 November at the Royal College of Physicians in Regent's Park, London.

Polar explorer and ex-marine Alan Chambers – the Iceman – led the first successful wintertime crossing of Iceland, a 500-mile journey that took 47 days in blizzard conditions and had previously been thought impossible. He also led the first successful British unsupported walk from Canada to the Magnetic North Pole. As a performance coach, he helped the England XV to its 2003 Rugby World Cup triumph and the England cricket team to victory in the 2005 Ashes series. He will speak on “Leadership in risky conditions”.

And rower Ben Hunt-Davis was a member of the England men's eight that won Olympic Gold at Sydney in 2000, the first England win in the event since 1912. His address is entitled “Teamwork to deliver results” – something he's well-qualified to speak on, since it was a revolution in team thinking that delivered the Gold Medal.

Alan and Ben join an all-star line-up of keynote speakers that includes GE Commercial Finance CEO John Jenkins. Workshops will include financial restructuring and turnaround funding options, facilitated by 3i Partner Tim Harrison, a legal perspective on risk, and defining and developing entrepreneurship.

TMA (UK) President Tyrone Courtman, Head of Business Recovery at Nottingham-based Cooper Parry, said: “We're both proud and fortunate to have men like Alan and Ben to address our annual conference – to me, they're not just motivational speakers; they're inspirational speakers.

“In the difficult months and years ahead, following the banking crisis and the withdrawal of credit from the market by the banks, members will have to be able to call not only on their undoubted experience and expertise, but on that bit of extra grit as well. John and our other keynote speakers  and workshop leaders can help us to take hard-headed decisions coolly and rationally; Alan and Ben can inspire us to carry them through.”
