14 May 2009 | The Economist - Business Turnaround Supplement

Much space has already been devoted to discussing the causes of the current recession, the events leading up tothe financial crash, and whether or not it could have been foreseen. This supplement looks at some of the lessons we can learn from the crisis. The present downturn has seen unprecedented corporate losses, and nowhere more than in the case of Lehman Brothers. In this supplement we take an in-depth look at the handling of Lehman's insolvency proceedings, both in the US and UK, and the difficulties of dealing with assets managed in several financial centres across the world. We also look at some of the issues thrown up by Lehman's failure, such as the transparency of businesses models and the current UK insolvency regime. A major issue in recent months has been the extent to which governments around the world should stimulate their economies. In this issue, Lord Mandelson explains the UK government's actions in giving help to businesses. There has also been a severe loss of confidence in the working practices of corporate managers, both in the business world and the public at large. Veteran investor John C. Bogle looks at how we can improve professional standards. In addition to a reform of business ethics, we also look at how businesses can manage their cashflow more efficiently, not least in order to unlock valuable resources.

We hope you will find this supplement both relevant and informative, and that it may help you to build more sustainable and efficient business strategies.
